Are there toll roads in and around the Villages? How about navigating to Orlando? Does the turnpike have toll booths? Keep reading to find out. I also answer questions about Sun Pass and toll costs. Don't let a few tolls get in your way to seeing all that Orlando has to offer!
No. There are no toll roads in The Villages. However, if you want to go to Orlando, only a short one-hour drive away, you will likely use a toll road. There are so many things to do in Orlando! Not only are the theme parks there but also there are amazing restaurants, sporting events, concerts, shopping, and medical centers. Getting to Orlando and getting around Orlando will require tolls. But the days of toll booths are long gone! You will need a Sun Pass to use the toll roads. If you do not have a Sun Pass, they will send you a bill for every overhead toll you go under. Not only are the toll-by-plate tolls more expensive, you will also have to pay the extra administration fee. Using a Sun Pass is very easy. There are two options. One is a Sun Pass mini and it is a sticker that is put on your windshield. It costs $4.99. The second option is a Sun Pass Pro that is a transponder. It is a clip to put on your sun visor and it can be moved between vehicles. It costs $14.99. Both transponders are available at Publix, Walgreens, or CVS. You will then need to register your transponder on a smartphone Sun Pass app or at their website on your computer. That is where you will enter credit card information to pay the tolls. How much are the tolls? Well, to and from the Disney parks costs $8.82 with a Sun Pass transponder but a toll-by-plate without a Sun Pass will cost $12.82 for the toll and $2.50 for the administration fee for a total of $15.32, a difference of $6.50 from the Sun Pass rate. So you will save the cost of your Sun Pass Mini in your first trip to Orlando!
Can you get to Orlando without a toll road. Yes. The back roads through Leesburg, Mt. Dora or Clermont can get you to the non-toll roads of Orlando. It almost doubles the time it takes to get there, however. You, and everyone else, are trying to avoid the tolls making those roads (like I-4) clogged most of the day. So grab a transponder, register online, set your GPS to a destination and go!
